Interfaith and Youth Program Director

Position

Reporting to the CAIR-Florida Regional Operations Director (ROD), the Interfaith and Youth Program Director (IYPD) is primarily responsible for overseeing all aspects of CAIR-Florida’s Interfaith and Youth Program initiatives state wide. In addition, the IYPD is responsible for the execution of CAIR-Florida’s Vision and Mission.

CAIR-Florida’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholder communities in Florida that include nonprofit organizations; federal, state and local government entities; adult educators; and advocacy- and faith-based groups. Through these relationships, the (IYPD) will champion the needs of American Muslims to dispel the misunderstanding that fosters Islamophobia through relationship building, educational programs, campaigns, and civic service. 
  • Responsible for implementing the initiatives of CAIR-Florida’s Interfaith Program which will include developing relationships with the leadership and members of other faiths throughout the state. Programming will be focused on educational and extracurricular activities to enhance the understanding of Islam and the Muslim community.
  • Responsible for representing Islam and CAIR-Florida at civic and religious meetings, professional conferences, community partner events, and more. Serve as CAIR-Florida’s religious liaison with the outside community by connecting with local clubs, other religious groups, and/or organizations. Will also be responsible for delivering and/or arranging Khutbahs throughout the state of Florida to empower American Muslims by amplifying the CAIR message and services that are offered by CAIR-Florida.      
  • Responsible for creating and implementing CAIR-Florida’s Youth Development Program initiatives throughout the state of Florida to empower young Muslims and serve as a role model for them to follow. Also responsible for recruiting, training, and managing youth volunteers throughout the state by establishing a positive rapport with children, parents, community leaders, and schools.
  • Responsible for executing youth conventions in all cities where CAIR-Florida has offices and operations. 

 

Strengthen Community Relations 

 

  • Actively engage and energize CAIR-Florida clients, stake holders, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders by media appearances and by participating in events.
  • Be available in emergency situations to respond to the community and/or individual concerns as directed by CED and/or ROD.
  • Serve as spokesperson for CAIR-Florida and proactively engage in countering Islamophobia.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree; substantial life experience will be considered
  • Five year’s minimum experience with youth and faith-based organizations, interfaith and youth networks, and working across faith traditions
  • In-depth knowledge of Islamic culture, history, and religion, preferably from an accredited Islamic Institution and/or a recognized un-broken chain of scholars or teachers to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH; Arabic-speaking a plus
  • Excellent follow-through, responsiveness, and attention to detail; ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and volunteers
  • Strong verbal and writing skills and ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively.
  • Strong project management and time management skills.
  • Personal commitment to furthering Islamic engagement of interfaith families and an appreciation of the importance of doing so in strengthening Islamic identity and community
  • Experience working with coalitions of diverse groups and demonstrated commitment to racial, ethnic religious, and economic diversity.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative and professional environment
  • Excellent writing skills, able to communicate with others, familiar with media outlets and platforms, ability to solve problems, strong public speaking skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Government Affairs Director

Position

Reporting to the CAIR-Florida Regional Operations Director, the Government Affairs Director (GAD) is primarily responsible for overseeing all aspects of CAIR-Florida’s legislative agenda and political mobilization activities, sets annual event and program goals for CAIR-Florida, and oversees their execution. The GAD also ensures execution of CAIR-Florida’s Vision and Mission.

ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Management:

  • Responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholder communities in Florida that include nonprofit organizations, federal, state and local government entities, adult educators, and advocacy- and faith-based groups. Through these relationships, the GAD will advocate for the needs of American Muslims.
  • Responsible for mobilizing local communities and allies for CAIR-Florida events including annual banquets, Ramadan fundraising and other events by coordinating activities, scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of CAIR-Florida coordinators throughout the state.
  • Responsible for mobilizing state-wide communities and allies on relevant government affairs issues including anti-Sharia bills and Islamophobic comments by public officials by coordinating activities, scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of CAIR-Florida coordinators throughout the state.
  • Monitor legislation and policy activities, advise appropriate staff members about applicable policy proposals and actions in order to analyze potential impacts, represent American Muslims in developing public policy, and present testimony to legislators. 
  • Responsible for developing a wide range of materials in support of CAIR-Florida’s government relations agenda such as action alerts, legislative summaries, factsheets, and reports. With this information, the GAD will develop a comprehensive, proactive project program that incorporates organizational values to actively participate with community based coalitions to include educational seminars, workshops, and discussions programs.   
  • Responsible for developing and managing non-Legal volunteers and interns to help execute CAIR-Florida’s Vision and Mission.
  • Organize Annual meetings with federal, state, and local representatives to present factsheets on issues of importance to their constituents. Develop relationships with members of each community to help them communicate with their representatives and other government leaders.
  • Create and distribute non-partisan voter guides that clarify the candidate’s positions and explains amendments, organize candidate forums, lead Get-Out-The-Vote campaigns and phone banking. Mobilize state-wide Muslim political leadership for Muslim Capitol Day. In unison with associates, conduct polls, gather data, and publish studies and articles on relevant issues.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelors’ Degree in political science, public affairs, public relations, communication or related field; substantial life experience may be taken into consideration.
  • Five years of progressively responsible, professional experience in government relations is required.

Civil Rights & Immigration Attorney

Essential Job Qualifications

 

  • Juris Doctor Degree and licensed and in good standing to practice law in any state (Florida license preferred, but not required).
  • A minimum of three years of experience practicing law required.  
  • At least one year of experience practicing Immigration and Nationality Law, specifically in the federal litigation and asylum a plus. 
  • Desire to work with victims of discrimination, immigrants, asylum seekers, and victims of unlawful discrimination.
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Desire to work in a team environment.
  • This position is a one-year commitment, however opportunity for advancement may be offered depending on performance, funding and needs.
  • Foreign language abilities and fluency, such as Arabic, a plus but not required.

Responsibilties/Duties

 

  • Direct Client Representation
  • Direct representation of discrimination clients, asylum seekers, lawful permanent residents, and U.S. Citizens filing family petitions before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, and the Board of Immigration Appeals for asylum and related forms of relief (e.g., adjustment of status, prosecutorial discretion, and employment authorization). This work includes drafting client affidavits, performing legal and country conditions research, assembling asylum applications, authoring motions and briefs, and representing clients at interviews and hearings.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the legal staff.
  • Assist in intake and evaluation of new cases with the legal team.
  • Maintain and enhance legal expertise through educational programs and CLEs.
  • Guide interns with case strategy and legal research.
  • Preparing and representing clients in interviews at the Miami Asylum Office and other local USCIS Offices.
  • Preparing clients for master and individual hearings before the Immigration Court.
  • Advocate administratively for clients with unlawfully delayed immigration application.
  • Litigation Strategy
  • Work collaboratively with Civil Rights Director and Immigration Attorney in identifying and executing immigration litigation due to unlawfully delayed applications.
  • Draft and execute federal mandamus and delayed naturalization delay complaints and litigation.
  • Pro Bono Program Support
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of legal interns and volunteer pro-bono attorneys.
  • Legal Outreach and Fundraising
  • Maintain and enhance alliances with community groups and other organizations.
  • Speak to various groups about CAIR-Florida’s Immigration Programs
  • Create brochures for the Immigration Program
  • Cooperate in the writing of applicable portions of Annual report.
  • Assist with various aspects of grant writing and fundraising, including accessing statistics, client stories, and highlighting work for banquets and fundraising drives throughout the year.
