IL: MUSLIM GROUP PLANS 5K RUN AT PARKLAND
Sam Slaven describes himself as a retired runner, but he's putting his experience in races all over the world to good use at Parkland College.
Slaven, 28, who joined Parkland's Muslim Student Association to rid himself of negative images he brought home from fighting in Iraq, has planned the association's April 7 5K run around the college's Perimeter Road.
The run is expected to attract prominent participants because of its healthy pay-out - $1,000 each for top male and female winners of the 5K; $500 each for second-place winners; and $250 each for third-place winners.
Slaven said registration starts at 8 a.m., a 1-mile run/walk starts at 9:15 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10 a.m. He said runners are welcome to participate in both events.
"It's neat to see a group working together to help out Habitat," he said of the beneficiaries of the fundraiser, Parkland's Habitat for Humanity organization. "My experience with the association is changing my stereotype thinking all Arabs are terrorists who want to blow people up. This cause is humanitarian."
