Civil Rights Advocate

Schedule type: Full-time (Non-exempt)

Location: Office located in Anaheim, CA. Requires travel throughout Greater Los Angeles Area.

Be at the frontlines in protecting free speech, the right to freely practice one’s faith, the right to pursue employment opportunities without harassment and the right to live as an active and engaged American without reprisal. The Civil Rights Advocate will perform a variety of support activities of a responsible, difficult and confidential nature including:

  • Providing legal administrative support to attorneys in the Civil Rights Department
  • Coordinating and conducting intake requests, interviews, follow-ups, and responses; summarizing intake substance and presenting recommendations for future action or referral
  • Performing legal research using computerized data base, online resources and legal materials
  • Drafting letters and memoranda for cases and assisting attorneys with other document preparation
  • Maintaining the case management system of the civil rights department, including inputting cases into CAIR National’s database
  • Maintaining calendar system for deadlines and timely filing of extensions, pleadings, petitions and applications
  • Organizing and tracking legal files
  • Serving as a liaison to other groups and entities vital to the positive resolution of cases
  • Providing clients with referrals to other services
  • Generating department reports and statistics
  • Providing additional support to civil rights staff as needed
  • Organizing and engaging in special civil rights events, forums and sensitivity trainings
  • Preparing retainers, FOIAS, and DHS TRIP applications for clients, under attorney supervision


  • Paralegal Certification, with 1-3 years professional experience in the field.
  • The ideal candidate would demonstrate:
    • 1-2 years of experience in the area of civil rights/employment
    • 1-2 years of experience working with clients, customers, etc.
    • Ability to manage and prioritize caseload
    • Effective time management
    • Familiarity with Westlaw and other legal search engines, proficiency in internet research
    • Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and an ability to meet strict deadlines
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
    • Proficiency in Arabic and/or Urdu – preferred
    • Experience working with the American Muslim community

CAIR-Greater Los Angeles Area is looking for a Grant Writer.

The Grant Writer is responsible for supporting the Development Department by successfully growing income through grant opportunities. Responsibilities include researching, applying for, and managing grants. They are responsible for submitting timely and accurate reports for all existing grant-funded projects.

The role requires strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. The candidate must be comfortable working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with a rapidly growing organization.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation, government and corporate sources
  • Research potential grants, stay up-to-date on current and potential partners’ work to explore opportunities, arrange meetings to build/maintain relationships with funders
  • Work with other departments to gather information necessary to complete grant applications and reporting requirements
  • Maintain system for document tracking, follow up on grant deliverables and submit reports as required on a timely basis
  • Assist with other Development projects as assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree and previous grant writing experience preferred

Operations Coordinator

Reports to: Operations Manager

Location: Office located in Anaheim, CA. Requires travel throughout Greater Los Angeles Area.

CAIR-LA is hiring for an Operations Coordinator. The Operations Coordinator will report directly to the Operations Manager and is primarily responsible for a wide variety of duties: administration of the day-to-day office tasks related to Operations as well as payroll, accounts payable, cash processing, financial reports, etc.  The Operations Coordinator will serve as the point person to filter staff requests and coordinate appropriately.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Manage payroll process in coordination with the Operations Manager
  • Manage and track employee benefits and leaves of absence including vacation and sick time
  • Responsible for day-to-day accounts payable operations including collecting invoices and IRS Forms such as W-9, paying and liaising with vendors, collecting receipts, reviewing business expense reconciliation, coordinating organizational purchase card reconciliation, issuing reimbursements, maintaining vendor and contract files
  • Processes weekly check and cash deposits
  • Prepared detailed financial reports with detailed information for accounting
  • Provide support for annual financial audits for CAIR-CA & CCTHC
  • Facilitate the employee onboarding process, including preparing new hire and benefit enrollment forms, time and attendance setup, completing I-9 verifications, and conducting new hire orientations.
  • Manage the recruitment process to fill open positions, advertising job positions on relevant channels (Indeed, Company website, etc.) and screening resumes
  • Bid procurement for on-going projects and building maintenance
  • Provide administrative support including reserving meeting spaces, managing logistics of Board meetings and travel arrangements for management staff
  • Ensures that all required employment law postings are updated and present within the organization
  • Acts as purchasing department for the organization and obtain executive signatures as needed
  • Manages the employee recognition program and overall workplace initiatives
  • Works with the Operations Manager to help maintain proper office & HR policies
  • Performs additional duties in office operations and personnel administration as directed by the Operations Manager


  • 5 years solid experience in Administrative Support. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Superb organizational and time management skills, with strong attention to detail
  • The ability to prioritize competing deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of electronic office equipment and applications (QuickBooks)
  • Strong ethical standards

CAIR-Greater Los Angeles Area is looking for a passionate and talented individual to fill the Part-Time Community Organizing Position. Join one of the most dynamic teams defending civil rights on behalf of the American Muslim community, enhancing understanding of Islam, protecting civil liberties, promoting justice and empowering American Muslims.

Key Roles and Responsibilities: This position entails coordinating CAIR-LA’s work in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop organizing campaigns around key advocacy and civil rights issues
  • Represent CAIR-LA in coalition meetings and work collaboratively on joint efforts with community organizations and coalition partners
  • Develop strategic partnerships with community-based organizations working in diverse communities in Southern California
  • Speak publicly on behalf of CAIR-LA at rallies, town halls and mosque events
  • Develop, conduct, and widely publicize Know Your Rights trainings that promote grassroots leadership, strategic issue campaigns, organizing, and coalition building on priority issue areas
  • Galvanize support of community organizations, public officials, law enforcement officers, faith leaders, business leaders, donors, and new and diverse communities for organizing campaigns
  • Work collaboratively with grassroots leaders, allies, and CAIR-LA advocacy team to execute large and effective community actions (public hearings, protests, vigils, etc.)
  • Identify, cultivate, and develop strong community leaders who will lead campaigns that pursue CAIR-LA’s advocacy and civil rights priorities
  • Identify, recruit, and train CAIR-LA volunteers to participate in civil liberties and social justice campaigns and programs
  • Coordinate and execute Voter Registration, GOTV and Ballot Initiative campaigns in affiliate areas
  • Help lead civic engagement initiatives: GOTV, Phone Banking, Canvassing Campaigns, Digital Organizing Campaign, and help Build CRM Database in the Greater Los Angeles Area
  • Meet with municipal, state and federal elected officials to advocate for civil liberties
  • Help lead Census Outreach Program in the Los Angeles County Area (Attend Census Table, Formulate Social Media Strategies to implement Census Outreach Program, create canvassing and phone banking campaign for Census Outreach Program)
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelors degree or four years of experience in the field
