NJ: Muslim Youth Claims Gold at U.S. Championships

Saifudeen Nausrudeen, 13, won the gold medal in the 800m and silver in the 1500m at the 2008 AAU U.S. National Indoor Championships on Feb. 16 in Merrillville, Ind.

Saifudeen won the 800m with a time of 2:13, one second shy of the AAU national indoor record.

“After months of hard training and development this gold medal means a lot to me," Saifudeen said. "This gold was possible only with Allah's permission and with the help and guidance from my family and coach."

On Feb. 10, Saifudeen also won the gold in the 800m and 1500m at the USATF Northeast Indoor Classics.

The young gold medalist is expected to do well at the upcoming USATF Championships this weekend in Boston.

"Saifudeen is having a great year," his coach, Ron McBride, said. "He works hard. We expect him to do many more great things in 2008. It has been a wonderful experience training and guiding Saifudeen so far.”

At the AAU U.S. National Indoor Championships more than 2,000 athletes from across the country participated.

Saifudeen, an 8th grader at Crossroads Middle School South, also holds track and field records for his school, county and state. He said he looks forward to participating in the Olympics some day.
