  • CAIR-New Jersey Calls for Dismissal of ICE Spokesman With Ties to Anti-Muslim Hate Groups

(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ, 8/6/2018) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ), today called for the dismissal of New Jersey’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesman who has ties to anti-Muslim hate groups and designated Islamophobes.

According to an investigation by Star-Ledger and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Emilio Karim Dabul, the spokesman for the state’s ICE office, previously edited and wrote for anti-Muslim hate groups including ACT for America and David Horowitz Freedom Center.

“It is unacceptable for someone with ties to known Islamophobes and anti-Muslim hate groups to speak on behalf of a government agency such as ICE,” said James Sues, executive director of CAIR-NJ. “We call for Emilio Karim Dabul’s immediate dismissal and will consider his continued employment as ICE’s acceptance of Islamophobia.”

ACT for America has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). “Brigitte Gabriel,” the anti-Muslim group’s founder, has argued that, “America is at stage two Islamic Cancer.” She believes “every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim,” a Muslim “cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States,” and that Arabs “have no soul.” [NOTE: “Brigitte Gabriel” is also known as Hanah Kahwagi Tudor and Brigitte Tudor.]

In the past, CAIR released two short videos exposing ACT for America’s bigotry and its links to White supremacist organizations.

In addition to being an editor for Gabriel, Dabul wrote for David Horowitz Freedom Center’s publication, FrontPage Magazine. According to the SPLC, Horowitz works closely with Pamella Geller to help her fund the designated anti-Muslim group, Stop Islamization of America.

Both Gabriel and Horowitz are listed as members of the nation’s "Anti-Muslim Inner Circle," according to the SPLC.

Dabul has also praised and defended anti-Muslim activist Steven Emmerson.

While Emmerson self-describes as an “expert on terrorism,” he previously accused Gov. Chris Christie of having a “strange relationship with radical Islam” and claimed that the Oklahoma City bomber’s attack in 1995 showed “a Middle Eastern trait.”

The Center for American Progress (CAP) classifies Emmerson’s group, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, as part of “the Islamophobia network in America.”

  • CAIR-Oregon and Portland DSA Call for Reforms in Wake of Portland Police Tactics Against Peaceful Counter-Protesters

(PORTLAND, OREGON, 8/4/2018) – The Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oregon) and the Portland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (Portland DSA) today called on government officials to investigate and enact reforms in the wake of the Portland Police Bureau’s violent actions that targeted Portland residents peacefully counter-protesting against racist far-right groups, including white supremacists, white nationalists, and neo-Nazi gangs that gathered to rally at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

Portland police made arrests of the counter-protesters and opened fire on the large crowd gathering using tear gas, pepper spray, and stun grenades. The counter-protesters were made up of a coalition of labor unions, immigrant rights advocates, democratic socialists and other justice advocacy groups.

SEE: In Chaotic Scene, Portland Police Launch Flash-Bangs and Pepper Balls at Antifascist Protesters

In a statement, CAIR-Oregon Spokesperson Zakir Khan said:

“Today Portland Police initiated violence causing injuries against peaceful civilians and a coalition of community groups organizing the counter-demonstration, as well as journalists who were covering Saturday’s events. Throughout the rally, Portland Police primarily focused upon protecting the alt-right groups’ hate bias-motivated behavior, including escorting its members throughout the area and allowing an unpermitted parade to commence through the streets of downtown Portland after the rally. When alt-right groups repeatedly disobeyed Portland Police commands, there were zero consequences. All people deserve EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER LAW. This discriminatory behavior causes us a great deal of concern and the Oregon Department of Justice must investigate the tactics that took place at these events.

“Second, we call for state legislators to draft a bill to provide funding for a Civil Rights Division within the Oregon Department of Justice. That bill should empower the Civil Rights Division to investigate police departments for improper uses of force and should assist in the creation of consent decrees. At present, the Oregon Department of Justice currently has no civil rights staff.

“Third, we believe the events of today’s rally and previous hate-fueled riots highlight how community policing is dead in Portland. In the span of over a year, we have realized the following:

    • We cannot trust the police to properly investigate nor protect against hate crimes.
    • We cannot trust the police to use tact towards both citizens and journalists.

We cannot trust the police to communicate effectively.

“For over a year, we have notified the Mayor’s office of the above three issues and there still remain problems today. In a progressive city like Portland, we deserve better.”

Olivia Katbi Smith, co-chair of the Portland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, adds: “Mayor Wheeler tells us again and again that the police are there to keep us safe, and again and again they have actively put us in danger and escalated the situation while protecting white supremacist fascist demonstrators. The police have made it very clear where their allegiances lie. We cannot continue to allow our brothers and sisters to be targeted and intimidated while the police either stand by and do nothing or actively enable fascist organizing in our city.”

(BOSTON, MA, 8/2/18) - The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA), a chapter of the largest Muslim advocacy and civil rights organization in the United States, today condemned a series of Islamophobic mailers targeting congressional candidate Tahirah Amatul-Wadud.

Amatul-Wadud is running for the first congressional district in Western Massachusetts.

CAIR-MA has received multiple reports of the mailer being sent to homes in the area of Westfield, Mass., following a campaign event by Amatul-Wadud in that city.

The bizarre, illustrated mailers (images of which are linked to below) allege that “The unelected elites, the radical progressive socialist liberals and the mass media are in alliance protecting Islamists so Islamists can get elected.” They also make reference to online conspiracy theories accusing Amatul-Wadud of being a secret agent for the Muslim Brotherhood and of attempting to “implement Sharia law” in America.

  • CAIR Welcomes New Hampshire AG's Actions After Assault on Muslim Couple

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/1/2018) – The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, today welcomed the New Hampshire attorney general’s decision to pursue charges under the state’s Civil Rights Act after an alleged hate crime targeting a Muslim couple.

According to media reports, the couple was requesting a refund at a motel in Jackson, N.H, when the manager allegedly shoved the couple and made comments about their religion and national origin. The manager reportedly hinted that the couple should not be there because of their religion. She was indicted on two counts of simple assault in July after the incident took place at Covered Bridge Riverview Lodge in April.

In addition to pressing criminal charges, the state’s attorney general will be pursuing charges under the state’s Civil Rights Act. The act prohibits discrimination in public accommodations and the sale or rental of housing or commercial property on the basis of race, color, national origin, and religion, among other things. The hearing for the alleged Civil Rights Act violation is going to be held on Aug. 24.

“We welcome the decision by the attorney general’s office to pursue civil rights charges in this case,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Naaz Modan. “These types of alleged hate crimes are part of a disturbing trend nationwide and are violations of civil rights that must be afforded to all Americans regardless of faith or background.”

  • CAIR Welcomes Minnesota Department of Education Probe of Bullying That Led to Muslim Student’s Suicide

(WASHINGTON, DC, 7/31/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the Minnesota Department of Education’s (MDOE) decision to open an investigation into Chisago Lakes High School’s non-compliance with the school district’s bullying prohibition policy.

CAIR filed a complaint and request for investigation on behalf of Faith Elsharkawy after her son, Jacob LeTourneau-Elsharkawy, committed suicide because of alleged severe bullying at Chisago Lakes High School.

Jacob, a 15-year-old Chisago Lakes High School student, was reportedly terrorized by school bullies, including multiple assaults that led to severe injuries and emergency room visits.  The bullying started after his classmates learned that he was Muslim.

In addition to physical assaults, Jacob was allegedly called derogatory and Islamophobic remarks such as being called a “terrorist” and “bomber man.” Despite multiple complaints and requests to protect her son from the bullying, Chisago Lakes High School administration failed to take steps to protect and support Jacob.

Jacob’s mother says she determined to ensure that no child at Chisago Lakes High School goes through the bullying and lack of inaction from administrators that Jacob endured.

SEE: Chicago Tribune: Jacob LeTourneau Commits Suicide After Being Bullied at Chisago Lakes High School

“Jacob was such a wonderful kid. He deserved so much better from the school, but they let him down. They let us all down. I cannot believe I was putting dirt on his grave instead of putting his gown on for his graduation with all his friends. This week I put the nameplate on his grave and the finality of it all really sunk in. Jacob and I are never going to sit on the couch and watch The Flash again. I do not want another mother in this district to be burying her child,” said his mother Faith.

“We welcome the Minnesota Department of Education’s decision to open an investigation into Chisago Lakes High School for its failure to take reasonable steps to stop and protect Jacob from an onslaught of bullying incidents at school,” said CAIR National Litigation Director Lena Masri. “Ms. Elsharkawy lost her child because of the school district’s failures, and she wants to make sure that no parent goes through the pain and suffering of losing a child to bullying.”

“Having met Jacob’s parents multiple times, what struck me was how quintessentially Minnesotan their life is. I met Uncle David and their dog Baby. Yet, during their most dire time of need, their school district not only abandoned them and disregarded the law, but made the situation even worse,” said CAIR-MN Civil Rights Director Amir Malik.

“School-based bullying targeting Muslim students has increased exponentially in our state because of the rise of Islamophobia. It is imperative that all stakeholders in our school systems step up to support efforts to protect all students, especially disproportionally-impacted Muslim students,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein.

CAIR has documented a significant rise in anti-Muslim school bullying incidents.

A study by CAIR’s California chapter reported that 55 percent of American Muslim students experience some form of bullying based on their religious identity. This is twice the national average for students who report being bullied at school.

  • CAIR Urges TSA to Drop ‘Quiet Skies’ Passenger Tracking Program Over Concerns About Religious, Racial Profiling

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/30/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), today called on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to drop the secret “Quiet Skies” passenger tracking program that the Muslim civil rights organization says may single out law-abiding Muslim travelers for official harassment.

Under that program, which was revealed by the Boston Globe and has been in existence in some form since 2010, teams of federal air marshals track American citizens not suspected of a crime and not under investigation or on a watch list. According to the Globe, the teams “document whether passengers fidget, use a computer, have a ‘jump’ in their Adam’s apple or a ‘cold penetrating stare,’ among other behaviors.”

All American citizens who enter the country are automatically screened for inclusion in the surveillance program. Dozens of air marshals have expressed concerns about the program.

SEE: Welcome to the Quiet Skies (Boston Globe)

In a statement, CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas said:

“The arbitrary surveillance of innocent people at airports guarantees that Muslim passengers will be disproportionately harassed by federal officials based on racial and religious profiling, with no benefit to the traveling public or to our nation’s security.

“This is just the latest example of the federal government's counterproductive and misguided approach to aviation security. Congress never authorized any agency to actively surveil innocent travelers.

“This program must be dropped and those responsible for this waste of government resources held accountable.”

Abbas noted that CAIR is currently challenging the government’s use of watch lists and other modes of racial and religious profiling in federal courts across the country.

Vander Voort wrote: “A devout Muslim could never serve in the Oval Office of the United States of America, not because of exclusion or discrimination, but because their own religion strictly prohibits them from taking an oath to anything other than Allah.”

She falsely claimed that if any Muslim did become president, that person would “either be a shoddy and inconsistent Muslim or subject to impeachment the moment they took office because Shariah Law and the United States Constitution are not compatible.”

“It is hard to keep up with the number of Islamophobes populating the Trump administration, but it the duty of all Americans to call out bigotry when they see it, particularly when it is espoused by someone in a position of authority and influence,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Her views are in direct contradiction to our Constitution, which prohibits religious tests for public office.”

Yesterday, CAIR called for the firing of a top Trump administration U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) appointee who spread conspiracy theories about then-President Barack Obama and made anti-Muslim comments on social media.

CAIR has repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic, white supremacist and racist Trump administration policies and appointments.

The Washington-based civil rights organization recently called on Republican Party leaders and elected officials to repudiate Donald Trump’s “aggressively racist and misogynistic” rant at a rally in Montana.

In his speech, Trump repeated his use of the racist slur “Pocahontas” to target Sen. Elizabeth Warren, mocked the #MeToo movement and falsely claimed that an African-American congresswoman has a “low IQ.”

(KANSAS CITY, KS, 7/26/2018) - The Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas) today expressed solidarity with the African-American community following an allegedly racially-motivated murder of an African-American woman by a reported white supremacist.

MeShon Cooper, 43, was found dead July 14 in a residence about a week after she had been reported missing. Ronald Lee Kidwell, 47, who lives at the home, is charged with second-degree murder in her death. Kidwell has been described as a white supremacist who had assaulted black people in the past. The FBI is investigating the murder as a possible hate crime.

“All Kansans must stand in solidarity with the African-American community after this allegedly hate-motivated act of violence by a suspect who has reportedly expressed white supremacist views,” said CAIR-Kansas Board Chair Moussa Elbayoumy. “We denounce acts of hate against any group and welcome the decision by law enforcement authorities to investigate it as a possible hate crime. This case may be part of a disturbing trend of emboldened white supremacy that is spreading nationwide following the election of Donald Trump.”

CAIR and the American Muslim community have in the past expressed solidarity with Jewish, Christian, Native American, African-American, and Sikh communities in New Mexico, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, Alabama, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Ohio, Texas, and other states following acts of hate, threats, violence, vandalism, arson, or bombings.

Most recently, the Ohio chapter of CAIR expressed solidarity with targets of alleged hate-motivated acts following the placement of a Confederate flag on the property of a mixed-race family.

  • CAIR Calls for Firing of VA Official Who Spread Conspiracy Theories, Islamophobic Comments

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/25/18) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called for the firing of a top Trump administration U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) appointee who spread conspiracy theories about then-President Barack Obama and made anti-Muslim comments on social media.

In 2016, shortly after joining the Trump campaign, VA Executive Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Thayer Verschoor shared a Facebook post that praised then-candidate Trump for promoting the conspiracy theory that "Obama's birth certificate is a fraud" and for understanding there's a Muslim "problem" in America.

“Someone who promotes conspiracy theories and anti-Muslim bigotry should not be in a policy-making position in our government,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge Mr. Verschoor to resign, or failing that, to be fired.”

McCaw said CAIR has repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic, white supremacist and racist Trump administration policies and appointments.
