The Schuylkill County Islamic Society mosque, closed since an April 11, 2007, fire caused major interior damage, will reopen today, according to Society President Dr. Mohamed M. Meeran.
A prayer service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the 1043 E. Norwegian St. mosque, Meeran said.
The society does not have a new religious leader, since Imam Shiraz Mansoor, who served the society’s 25 families for a decade, returned to South America in late October. Dr. Maqsood Malik, Pottsville, will conduct today’s prayer service, Meeran said.
The religious community was devastated when the fire ravaged their house of worship, causing more than over $35,000 in damages.
The fire gutted the building’s kitchen and reception hall and caused smoke and water damage to the rest of the two-story structure.
In October, Cresswell Brothers Inc., Pottsville, started the renovation project which cost “a little over $400,000,” Meeran said.
