Muslim civil rights group urges Americans to contact the White House to ask the president to fire Gorka
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/4/2017) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today renewed its call for President Trump to dismiss top counter-terrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka following revelations that he “publicly supported a violent racist and anti-Semitic paramilitary militia” in Hungary.
From the Forward newspaper: “In a video obtained by the Forward of an August 2007 television appearance by Gorka, the future White House senior aide explicitly affirms his party’s and his support for the black-vested Hungarian Guard (Magyar Gárda) — a group later condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for attempting to promote an ‘essentially racist’ legal order.”
“It is astounding that an individual with alleged links to racist and anti-Semitic groups still has a policy-making job in the White House,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “President Trump must demonstrate through action that racism, anti-Semitism and all other forms of bigotry will not be tolerated in his administration.”
McCaw noted that CAIR previously called for Gorka’s firing over media reports that he is a formal member of a Hungarian group listed by the U.S. State Department as having been “under the direction of the Nazi Government of Germany” during World War II. (#DropTheNazi)
An earlier exclusive report in the Forward indicated that Gorka’s membership in the far-right group, known as the Vitézi Rend, “could have implications for his immigration status.” The Forward noted that the “State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual specifies that members of the Vitézi Rend ‘are presumed to be inadmissible’ to the country under the Immigration and Nationality Act.”
Gorka has been criticized for his Islamophobic views, including declining on several occasions to say whether President Trump believes Islam is a real religion.
CAIR is calling on all Americans who oppose anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of bigotry to contact the White House to urge the president to fire Gorka.
