JULY 2020 BOOK SELECTION
Title: ‘How to Be an Anti-Racist’
Author: Ibram X. Kendi
“As Muslims, our faith teaches us to constantly seek knowledge and explore ways to create positive change in society,” said CAIR’s Community Engagement Intern in Maryland Hannah Shraim. “Our country is undergoing a pivotal point in history right now. As we delve deeper into conversations about what justice means in various contexts, CAIR’s Social Justice Book Club is an opportunity for all of us to learn, discuss and apply the knowledge we gain together.”
“The idea of this book club was conceived with the intention of encouraging our communities to collectively motivate and inspire one another as we navigate the often challenging path towards self-awareness, enlightenment and discovery,” said Director of CAIR’s Maryland office Zainab Chaudry. “One of our key objectives is to transform complicity into action from a place of compassion and healing.”
In the first week of every month, book club members will be assigned a book pertaining to social and racial justice issues. Members will receive and be invited to share quotes in a closed discussion group throughout the month. During the last week of every month, CAIR will plan a facilitated virtual discussion – sometimes featuring special guest speakers – to unpack themes, ideas and context in the book and pave the way for practically applying anti-racist behaviors and language in our daily lives.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
