(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/31/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and King Khalid Mosque, Inc., today encouraged community members to attend a Raleigh, N.C., City Council meeting on April 4 to oppose Shaw University’s plans to rezone and potentially tear down the King Khalid Mosque on its campus.
WHAT: Raleigh City Council Meeting on King Khalid Mosque
WHEN: April 4 at 6:15 p.m.
WHERE: Raleigh Municipal Building, 222 West Hargett Street, Raleigh, N.C.
The Raleigh City Council will have a public hearing about whether or not to let the administration of Shaw University rezone land on which the mosque is located. They will vote on this issue that same evening. Rezoning the land would give the university the ability to sell the building that contains the mosque, which was built with a donation from the Muslim community and open to the public for decades before Shaw University closed it in 2020. The university has refused to fully re-open the mosque, providing shifting and conflicting explanations.
The mosque is inviting community members to attend the hearing to oppose the university’s plans. The meeting is set to be held on the second floor. King Khalid Mosque also plans to host prayer and iftar. To attend the iftar, you must RSVP.
