CAIR Action Alert: Tell the Senate to Support RELIEF Act to Fix Green Card Backlog

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/22/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on all Americans to contact their Senators and tell them to support legislation that addresses the green card backlog by expanding the number of green cards available and protecting the diversity of the green card process.

The Resolving Extended Limbo for Immigrant Employees and Families (RELIEF) Act was introduced last week by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and provides a strong alternative to a different bill (H.R. 1044/S. 386) that would privilege high-skilled immigrants over all others in the immigration process.

Almost four million future Americans are currently waiting for immigrant visas and hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the U.S. are waiting for green cards. The current number of green cards available annually is not enough to meet need.

“From the Muslim Ban, to the unimaginably low cap on refugee admissions, to the crippling shortage of green cards for future Americans, our immigration process is broken,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “The RELIEF Act is an important first step toward addressing the green card backlog and ensuring that all can legally pursue the American Dream.”

Last week, CAIR and 10 other civil rights organizations sent a letter to all U.S. Senators urging them to support the RELIEF Act.
