In 2018, the Israeli Knesset adopted a discriminatory nation-state law that defines the country as “the nation-state of the Jewish people.”

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew criticism for declaring that Israel is a “nation state not of all its citizens, but only of the Jewish people,” at the expense of the country’s Palestinian Arab Christian and Muslim minority.

While on vacation, American Muslim sisters Nour (21) and Safa Hawash (18), members of the Dar AlHijrah Islamic Center, were assaulted by Israeli security forces as they were trying to help an elderly woman on the premises of the Al-Aqsa mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem. Their mother, Germeen Abdelkarim, also a U.S. citizen and Dar Al-Hijrah member, was also assaulted.

Prior to the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of State warned in its official travel advisory: “U.S. citizens of Arab or Muslim heritage have experienced significant difficulties and unequal and hostile treatment at Israel’s borders and checkpoints.”

Palestinians and Muslims worldwide remain concerned about Israel’s denial of religious rights for Muslims and Christians, and the ongoing Israeli effort to alter the religious landscape of Jerusalem. For several years, American Muslims have met with State Department officials to challenge aggressive Israeli actions targeting the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and its worshipers.

American Muslim For Palestine is dedicated to advancing the movement for justice in Palestine through education, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization. AMP is committed to ending U.S. support for the Israeli occupation, raising awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people, and supporting Palestinians’ right to freedom, justice, and self-determination in accordance with international law.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
