CAIR Applauds New Hampshire Town for Twice Canceling Anti-Muslim Speaker

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/8/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded the New Hampshire town of Grantham for twice canceling an event featuring anti-Muslim speaker Richard Spencer.

Last week, the Sullivan County Republican Committee planned to host a fundraiser featuring Spencer but had to move the event twice after widespread criticism from the community and planned protests. It was eventually held at an undisclosed location with only 20-25 attendees.

Robert Spencer is a notorious anti-Muslim activist who makes his living peddling conspiracy theories and depicting Islam as an inherently violent religion to conservative audiences across the country. He has been identified as one of the “Dirty Dozen: America’s Leading Islamophobes” who systematically “spread fear, bigotry, and misinformation” by the independent national media watch group Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). Spencer believes that, “traditional Islam is not moderate or peaceful” and attempts to assert that the violent extremists’ interpretation of the Quran is mainstream.

“Under the First Amendment, Mr. Spencer is free to spout his anti-Muslim bigotry, but Grantham was right to deny him the platform from which to spew that hate,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “This is a great example of a community coming together to stand against hate.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
