CAIR Attorney to Offer Oral Argument in Virginia Court in Ramadan Accommodations Case

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/6/23) – On Friday, April 7, an attorney with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will offer oral arguments in the Western District of Virginia case Crichlow v. Clarke, 4:23-cv-6.

[MEDIA ADVISORY: The argument will take place on Friday, April 7, at 10 AM before Judge Elizabeth K. Dillon. The hearing will be virtual. Contact the clerk’s office with inquiries about accessing the virtual hearing.]

Earlier this week, CAIR announced the filing of the lawsuit against the Virginia Department of Corrections and officials at Green Rock Correctional Center for their unlawful refusal to provide Ramadan accommodations to the Muslim incarceree Alexander Crichlow.

Crichlow, a Muslim who converted to Islam in Jan. 2023, fasts from dawn until sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. Since January, he has repeatedly asked prison officials to provide him with the same Ramadan accommodations as dozens of Muslims at Green Rock: receiving breakfast before dawn, a double serving of dinner at sunset and permission to gather daily for evening prayers with other Muslims.

The district court will hear arguments about whether the court should enter a temporary restraining order to require prison officials to provide Ramadan accommodations to Crichlow and other Muslim inmates who request them.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR offers an educational toolkit, called “A Correctional Institution’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” to help correctional officers and administrators gain a better understanding of Islam and Muslims.
