(AUSTIN, TEXAS, 1/8/17) – The Austin, Texas, chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Austin) said today that it will monitor the investigation of a fire that destroyed a mosque under construction in Travis County and will work with local community leaders in response to the blaze.
The Lake Travis Fire Marshall responded to the fire early morning of January 7 at the mosque under construction for the Islamic Center of Lake Travis and found the two-story building engulfed in flames. No one was injured in the fire and the cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The Islamic Center of Lake Travis said:
“In 2011, in response to local Steiner Ranch fires, Muslim kids began a campaign to collect funds for the affected families. This was the impetus for starting The Islamic Center of Lake Travis project. Five years later, with a heavy heart, the Islamic Center of Lake Travis regrets to inform you that we had an unexpected fire at the construction site last night. Unfortunately, the building is completely burned to the ground. At this time, the Travis County Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire. We'll update the community on the outcome of this investigation once it is completed. May Allah give us strength and courage to rebuild this masjid, Insha Allah.
“This is a great loss to us, and we are requesting the community to restrain from drawing any conclusion before the investigation is completed. May Allah keep our community and city safe and blessed.â€
