(PHOENIX, AZ, 10/5/16) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ) is seeking relief for members of a recently-resettled refugee family who are alleging that they have been unjustly ordered to be evicted from their home in Phoenix.
The family, which arrived last year, had previously raised concerns to apartment management regarding dangerous and unsanitary living conditions. They made repeated requests to management to rectify these requests, however the concerns went unaddressed.
The alleged issues included:
- The family's 2-year-old daughter being cut badly, due to dangerous nails sticking up from carpeted area.
- A lack of cold water running to the shower, causing the temperature to be scalding. The family has been forced to shower using buckets.
- A garbage disposal left broken, causing a substantial backup in the sink. According to the family and witnesses, this has left the entire living space smelling of garbage.
- A maintenance worker reportedly entering the apartment without notice, while the mother and children were sleeping and while the father was at work. No repairs were ultimately done.
After extensive complaints by the family, the apartment management allegedly retaliated against them by initiating an intent to terminate the lease, due to a frivolous “noise complaint.”Â
“Recently, we have been seeing a sharp upswing in cases of harassment, discrimination and backlash against newly-settled refugees in Arizona” said Liban Yousuf, CAIR-AZ's civil rights director.Â
Yousuf added: “It is incumbent upon our institutions to stand up for those amongst us who have fled from some of the harshest conditions imaginable, and ensure that they enjoy the same rights and representation as all Americans.”
CAIR-AZ will represent the family at their upcoming eviction court hearing, this Thursday.
