(PHOENIX, AZ, 1/10/2022) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a hate crime investigation into an alleged incident of racist harassment targeting a multiracial family in Tempe, Ariz.
Surveillance video shows a group of teenagers placing a “for sale” sign with a racial slur and some bananas attached to it in the family’s yard. The sign also had the name of the 16-year-old who lived in the house written on it. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

“We welcome the hate crime investigation into this disturbing and hateful act,” said CAIR-AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif. “No family should be subjected to this kind of harassment and intimidation.”
She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
