CAIR-CA Publishes 2020 General Election Voter Guide

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 10/12/2020) – The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) today published its 2020 Voter Guide which offers resources to assist Muslims in California and their allies as they prepare to vote in the November election.

CAIR-CA’s Muslim voter guide includes a congressional scorecard, a state legislative scorecard, and recommendations on the statewide propositions.

The scorecards reflect the voting performance of California’s members of Congress, as well as the votes of state assembly members and senators. The votes of each legislator have been rated positive or negative depending on how closely their votes on relevant legislation correlated with civil rights and social justice priorities identified by CAIR-CA.

The guide also includes CAIR-CA’s recommendations on the state’s ballot propositions. As a nonprofit organization, CAIR-CA cannot campaign for or against specific candidates for office, but is able to endorse ballot measures.

The voter guide is part of CAIR-CA’s voter empowerment and mobilization efforts. In addition to the distribution of the voter guide, CAIR-CA’s efforts include registering voters, hosting virtual candidate forums, and holding voter education webinars.

Sameena Usman, CAIR-SFBA Government Relations Coordinator said in a statement:

“In this critical election, it’s important for voters to review the votes of their elected officials and learn about the ballot propositions that will impact us for years to come. Having this information empowers community members to take part in their constitutional right to vote.”

Amer Rashid, CAIR-CA Legislative & Government Affairs Manager said in a statement:

“California is home to more than one million Muslims who deserve representatives and policies that work for them. With the CAIR-CA Voter Guide, we hope to empower the Muslim community to continue to make informed voting decisions and ensure that our representatives know that we are both present and engaged.”

CAIR-SFBA is an office of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
