CAIR Calls for UN Probe After New Reports of Israeli Torture and Abuse of Palestinian Detainees

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the United Nations to investigate Israel’s torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees after a new report quotes prisoners as saying they were brutally beaten, burned with hot water, urinated on by guards, denied food and medical attention, and sprayed with sewage water.

The report released by the Palestinian Authority’s Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society included testimonies from 23 prisoners held at al-Naqab Prison in southern Israel and at the Naftali camp in northern Israel.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor also says:“Israeli prisons and detention centers, by their very design and structure, constitute a systematic framework inherently aimed at torturing and mistreating Palestinian prisoners and detainees, while depriving them of their most basic human rights.”

In a statement, CAIR said:

“We again urge the United Nations to conduct a full investigation of the systematic torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees by the far-right government of indicted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu. Unfortunately, through its complicity with Israel’s ongoing genocide, the Biden administration shares the blame for these human rights abuses.”

Hooper added that CAIR has repeatedly condemned Israeli torture of Palestinian detainees.

In December, CAIR condemned the torture of Palestinian prisoners by Israeli forces after a report published by the Israeli human rights group B’tselem described acts of violence, humiliation and abuse.

Israel has slaughtered more than 46,000 people in Gaza – mostly women and children – has destroyed the vast majority of Gaza’s civilian and medical infrastructure, forcibly displaced almost the entire population, and has imposed forced starvation in the areas it has invaded.

Last year, CAIR welcomed a detailed submission by South Africa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlining evidence of Israel’s violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention in its war on Gaza.

Also last year, CAIR applauded the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza genocide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
