(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/12/15) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on leading GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson drop a top foreign policy adviser who claims Muslims have “infiltrated†the United States.
Robert F. Dees, a retired Army officer, has demonstrated longstanding anti-Muslim bigotry and has advocated for a national security strategy based on Christian evangelism.
Dees indicated that he views all Muslims with suspicion. In 2013, he said: “It’s not about these guys who came from way out, knocked down some buildings [in the 9/11 attacks], and then have left. We have a serious internal issue. We’ve been infiltrated.â€
In 2014, he told a reporter: “I think it’s very important that we understand the threat. Trying to appease the Muslim religion by saying [it is] a peace-loving religion is problematic.†He also suggested that the “final end state†of Islam is “violence and oppression.â€
In 2005, Dees recommended using the military as a tool in eventually bringing the American public to evangelical Christianity. “We must pursue our particular means for transforming the nation — through the military,†said Dees.
“By seeking the advice of someone with such Islamophobic and un-American views, Ben Carson is reinforcing the belief that he would not abide by constitutional protections of religious freedom and would involve our nation’s military in a sectarian religious crusade,†said CAIR Government Affairs Manager Robert McCaw. “We believe Dr. Carson’s mainstreaming of anti-Muslim sentiment is resulting in a spike in rhetorical and physical attacks on American Muslims and their institutions.â€
McCaw said CAIR recently called on the Republican National Committee (RNC) to repudiate Carson’s stated willingness to consider religion as probable cause for searches.
CAIR announced the renewal of its “Share the Quran†campaign in response to Carson’s false claim that Islam is “inconsistent†with the Constitution and his bigoted belief that a Muslim should not be elected president.
Carson has also suggested that American Muslims have ‘different loyalties.â€

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
