CAIR Calls on Cleveland Heights Police to Probe Anti-Semitic, Racist Vandalism

(CLEVELAND, OH, 6/15/2018) – The Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) today called on the Cleveland Heights Police Department to investigate the June 12 targeting of a Jewish-owned business with anti-Semitic graffiti as a potential crime of bias.

The words “Judicah Home” were allegedly sprayed in black spray paint near the rear entrance to the business. News reports stated that two other graffiti incidents in the area on the same date targeted African-Americans.

In a statement CAIR-Cleveland Executive Director Julia Shearson said:

“Vandalism of this nature is an act of hate that cannot be tolerated in our communities. Crimes of bias not only harm individuals they also stigmatize and intimidate entire groups of people and erode the fabric of civil society. As such, we urge the Cleveland Heights Police Department to thoroughly investigate this matter as a potential hate crime due to evident signs of bias and ethnic intimidation.

“We also support the recent introduction of legislation in the Cuyahoga County Council to create a county wide human rights commission that will help strengthen civil rights protections to ensure equal access and opportunities with respect to employment, housing, and public accommodations. We need such legislation to underpin our civic values of equity and inclusion.”
