(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/16/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged officials in Washington, D.C., to address the spike in anti-Asian incidents in that city.
Last year in D.C., there were 91 hate crime incidents, with 23 of them targeted Asians.

“We urge public officials and political leaders in Washington, D.C., and nationwide to address the disturbing spike in anti-Asian hate, as well as the similar rise in bigotry targeting all minority communities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper noted that earlier this month, CAIR expressed solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community following the release of a new report indicating that anti-Asian hate crimes spiked 339 percent in 2021. [Note: Many Muslims are also members of the AAPI community.]
That report, published by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, indicated that anti-Asian incidents in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities surpassed record numbers recorded in 2020. The anti-Asian figures were part of an 11 percent increase in reports to police in a dozen cities nationwide, with African-Americans the most targeted group across most cities.
He said Washington, D.C.-based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and other forms of bigotry.
