CAIR Calls on North Carolina Fire Department, City Facility to Drop Islamophobic Speaker Who Tweeted ‘#IslamIsTheProblem’

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/3/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on North Carolina’s Skyland Fire Department and Hendersonville City Operations Center to cancel events featuring a notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist who is scheduled to speak at an event hosted by the Asheville Tea Party.

Islamophobe Chris Gaubatz has been invited to speak on Thursday, May 16 at the Skyland Fire Department and on Friday, May 17 at the Hendersonville City Operations Center on “exposing the Left working with Jihadis to undermine our nation.”

Gaubatz has tweeted, “When you understand the threat, you understand that there is no such thing as ‘radical islam’ [sic], just islam. [sic],” using the hashtag “#IslamIsTheProblem.”

In the past, Gaubatz joined his former employer and fellow anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist John Guandolo in smearing American mosques and claiming the Black Lives Matter movement is funded by “enemies” of America.

Gaubatz falsely claimed that there are Muslim “no-go zones” in Minnesota and that the then Muslim members of Congress, Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and André Carson (D-Ind.), had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. He has also been linked to other online Islamophobes.

“While Mr. Gaubatz is free to spew whatever anti-Muslim conspiracy theories he likes, the Skyland Fire Department and Hendersonville City Operations Center should not offer the perception of government endorsement for these debunked, hateful fantasies,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “If the Asheville Tea Party wishes to promote bigotry, it should rent a private venue.”

McCaw noted that last year, CAIR welcomed a decision by Virginia’s Amherst County Sheriff’s Office to tell the Amherst County Republican Committee that an event featuring Gaubatz must be moved to another venue. CAIR had urged the sheriff’s office and the Amherst County Republican Committee to drop the event.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
