(WASHINGTON D.C., 12/29/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Rhode Island Republican Party to renounce State Representative Patricia Morgan’s “divisive and tone-deaf” comments on race.
Yesterday, Rep. Morgan tweeted that she once “had a Black friend” who is now “hostile and unpleasant.” She said she “didn’t do anything to her, except be white,” and blamed critical race theory for “dividing people based on skin color.” The tweet was met with widespread backlash, with Democrat and Republican lawmakers condemning Rep. Morgan’s statements.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“Representative Morgan’s deeply divisive and tone-deaf comments are unacceptable for a lawmaker who must represent the interests of her diverse constituents,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The Rhode Island GOP must clearly renounce her comments and reject the manufactured fear-mongering about critical race theory.”
Hooper noted that CAIR has consistently opposed attacks on anti-racism teaching in schools.
