(CHICAGO, IL, 2/1/05) – The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) today announced that, because of poplar demand, it is extending the “Building Bridges to Islam” lecture series currently being offered in cooperation with Elderhostel, the nation’s largest educational and travel organization for older adults.

Each day-long event, held in a local mosque, includes lectures focusing on the Quran, Islamic law, Muslims in America, women’s rights, and misconceptions about Islam. Participants are also taken on a tour of the mosque, observe an Islamic prayer and sample foods from around the Muslim
world.

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Every Wednesday until March 9
WHERE: Islamic Cultural Center (ICC), 1810 N. Pfingsten Road, Northbrook, IL

“Our goal is to demystify Islam and to show the reality of the American
Muslim experience,” said CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Yaser Tabbara.
“Outreach to other faith communities is one way American Muslims can help
build the bridges of understanding that foster better interfaith relations.”

Tabbara said the lecture series was extended from four weeks to eight
because of the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the first session.
Each week’s program hosts up to 80 participants.

“This is the type of community-level initiative that America needs as we
try to understand each other and the world around us,” CAIR-Chicago
Communications Director Ahmed Rehab.

CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 31 offices and
chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance understanding
of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American
Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
