(WASHINGTON, D.C, 1/10/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Amazon to probe a possible bias motive for the firing of a Muslim employee.
According to the former Amazon employee, she was allegedly verbally assaulted and publicly humiliated by a co-worker during her shift at an Amazon fulfillment center in Baltimore, Md.

In a complaint to CAIR, the Muslim worker stated in part:
“I was verbally insulted by an associate at Amazon, it started over a basket of work that needed to be done, at the time I didn’t know the other associate had already claimed the basket until I went to grab it and she snatched it away from me very rudely and yelled at me, I had removed an envelope from the basket and when I tossed it back in the basket she claimed I hit her in the face with the envelope, which is untrue. She then yelled out very loud in a strong aggressive voice ‘if you hit me in my face I will F… you up you! You fake A.. Muslim I will burst you in your Mother F…… face, walking around here in those clothes which I wear my Islamic garments including my Hajab [sic] every day.’ She cursed so loud almost everyone in the warehouse that evening heard her.”
After filing a complaint with Amazon human resources, the Muslim employee was reportedly suspended and eventually terminated by Amazon a few weeks later.
In a statement, CAIR Office in Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:
“Every employee has the right to a workplace environment free from discrimination, harassment, or retaliation regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or other protected identity classification. Amazon has the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to ethical employment practices at their Aberdeen center. We strongly urge them to address the concerns raised in our letter, fully and transparently investigate these complaints and take appropriate action.”
In 2020, CAIR received over 6,000 complaints involving discrimination, harassment, bullying, physical assaults and other incidents nationwide. CAIR also noted that employment discrimination accounted for 57% of all discrimination complaints.
