CAIR Condemns Deadly Bomb Attack on Shia Mosque in Afghanistan As “Cowardly and Un-Islamic”

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/21/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a “cowardly and un-Islamic” bombing targeting a Shia mosque in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, which killed at least 17 worshipers. An ISIS affiliate has claimed responsibility for the attack. Other reports indicate an even higher death toll.

Several other bomb blasts occurred in Kunduz and the eastern Nangarhar province, but it is not clear if they are connected to ISIS.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“We condemn this cowardly and un-Islamic attack targeting those offering prayers in a Shia mosque. We call for the swift apprehension and punishment for those responsible. These types of attacks are a cruel and cynical attempt to divide and harm the Afghan people.”

In October, CAIR condemned a similar attack perpetrated by the terrorist ISIS affiliate group.
