(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/8/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Mississippi on Wednesday that targeted several companies across the state and led to almost 700 arrests.
Some 680 migrants were arrested and taken away on buses in the largest raid since December 2006.

“We condemn these raids in the strongest possible terms and express our utmost concern for the families and children facing separation from their loved ones,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “The Trump administration has weaponized ICE as a means of targeting immigrant communities and carrying out this president’s xenophobic, white supremacist agenda. These raids occurred just a day after Mississippi’s primary election and it’s impossible not to see this as a message to intimidate Latinx voters.”
McCaw urged community members to download and read CAIR’s ”˜Know Your Rights During Encounters with Law Enforcement’ guide.

In June, CAIR condemned ICE raids that took place in Maryland, calling them “symptomatic of the Trump administration’s broader anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-refugee agenda.”

CAIR recently issued an action alert calling for humane conditions for migrant children at the border after reports revealed deplorable, unsanitary living conditions.

According to lawyers who visited Clint Border Patrol station, hundreds of children are being held in custody without access to adequate food, water or sanitation. Toddlers without diapers are relieving themselves in their pants, children as young as seven are caring for infants they just met, and nobody has access to toothbrushes, toothpaste or soap. More than a dozen children had the flu, and several were in quarantine cells without adult supervision.
