CAIR Condemns Indiana GOP Candidate’s Islamophobic Facebook Posts

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/7/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned Greencastle, Ind., city council candidate Haywood Ware for a series of Islamophobic Facebook posts and called for that candidate to issue an immediate apology.

The posts, some of which have now been deleted, include statements like “America needs to shut down all Mosques and ban Islam,” and “I denounce Islam. I denounce Allah & Mohammed. I denounce the Quran and Sharia Law. Any questions?”

At least one statement – “Just saw a sign that said, “I would rather have 1000 Muslim customers in my shop than 1 U.S. soldier” Funeral directors are funny people” – could be viewed as a death threat.

“Mr. Ware should apologize immediately and make a good faith effort to reach out to the local Muslim community in Greencastle to help dispel his bigoted misconceptions about Islam,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.

“We are deeply concerned by the xenophobic and Islamophobic messages posted by Haywood Ware. Messages like these from political candidates and elected officials fuel a culture of bigotry and threaten the safety and well-being of our communities,” said Faryal M. Khatri, board secretary and communications chair, Muslim Alliance of Indiana.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
