CAIR Condemns Mississippi Students Posing with Guns in Front of Bullet-Riddled Emmett Till Memorial

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/26/2019) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the actions of three University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) students who stood with guns in front of a bullet-riddled memorial to Emmett Till, a teen whose murder propelled the Civil Rights Movement. The plaque stands on the site where Till’s body was found in 1955.

The students were suspended from their fraternity after one of them posted the photo on Instagram. The students are now facing possible investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The unconscionable actions of these students mock the pain endured by the Till family, the civil rights community and the nation. They mock the lives lost in the continuing struggle for equality and justice,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Hooper said the Washington-based civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

Earlier today, CAIR welcomed a decision by Hampton University in Hampton, Va., to fire nine police officers who posted misogynistic and racist remarks on social media.
