(BALTIMORE, MD, 1/10/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an incident in which student athletes from two Montgomery Co. high schools were allegedly targeted with racist remarks.

CAIR also called on Montgomery County Public Schools to update their anti-Racism policy.

Players on the basketball teams of Albert Einstein and Sherwood high schools in Maryland’s Montgomery County have been accused of making racist remarks to each other during a recent game. Montgomery County Public Schools has launched an investigation. The incident comes after two similar incidents between the two teams in October and September.

“This is the third time in recent months Montgomery County student athletes have been targeted with racist comments, and it’s time for the school district to take more serious measures,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “We call on the school district to update its anti-racism policy to ensure that these incidents no longer occur.”

Chaudry noted that CAIR welcomed an investigation by Montgomery County Public Schools into the racist incidents that occurred in September and October.
