CAIR Condemns Trump Administration’s ‘Cover Up’ of Migrant Child Deaths, Calls for Congressional Hearings

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/23/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the Trump administration’s apparent cover up of the death of a 10-year-old migrant child while in U.S. custody and called on the Senate and House Homeland Security Committees to hold open hearings after conducting a full investigation into that case and the deaths of other migrant children.

The unnamed girl from El Salvador died on September 29, almost eight full months before the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported it yesterday. She was detained in March in San Antonio.

Six children have died in custody since Trump took office. No children died in custody in the 10 years prior.

“We condemn yet another heartbreaking, unconscionable death of a child while in United States custody and call for congressional hearings on the elaborate eight-month cover up that followed her death and the deaths of the other detained migrant children,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “The Senate and House Homeland Security Committees must conduct full investigations and hold open hearings so that the administration is held accountable for the cruel and inhumane policies that have left six defenseless children dead.”
