CAIR Denounces Maryland Congressman’s ‘Contemptible Defense’ of Trump’s Racist Tweets

(BALTIMORE, MD, 7/15/19) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today denounced Congressman Andy Harris’ (R-MD) defense of Donald Trump’s series of racist tweets over the weekend advising four members of congress – all women of color – to “go back” to where they “came from” and help fix the government’s problems there.

CAIR Condemns Trump’s Racist ‘Go Back’ Where ‘They Came’ From Tweets Targeting Congresswomen

Trump’s Sunday morning tweets suggested the congresswomen “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. . .You can’t leave fast enough.”

Representative Harris (R-MD), whose constituency voted more than 60 percent for Trump, said in an interview Monday that his comments were “clearly not racist,” and that he “could have meant go back to the district they came from – to the neighborhood they came from.”

“It’s shameful and appalling that a Maryland congressional representative would exploit this dark moment to curry favor with his base by condoning and justifying Trump’s racist tweets,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry.

“Unfortunately, the American people have come to expect tacky, sub-standard communications from this president. But we demand principled leadership, not partisan politics, from congressional and local elected officials who have the capacity to temper his problematic rhetoric.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
