CAIR-DFW Applauds Texas School’s Inclusion of Muslim Holiday

(DALLAS, TEXAS, 5/30/2018) – The Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW) today applauded Ashworth Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, for its decision to allow posters recognizing Ramadan after at first denying requests from Muslim parents for the same inclusion the school affords to other faith groups.

Muslim parents filed an incident report with CAIR-DFW earlier this month in which they stated that the school initially approved the posters for hanging in the school. However, school officials withdrew their approval after the posters arrived.

Attorney Huma Yasin, a CAIR-DFW board member, accompanied the parents in a meeting with Principal Patrick Guy and Superintendent Beth Hollinger. At the conclusion of the meeting, all parties agreed that hanging the “Happy Ramadan” posters was appropriate because similar accommodations have been made for other faith-based holidays in the school.

“Public schools can’t favor one religious group over another,” said John Janney, executive director of CAIR-DFW. “Inclusion is healthy for our society, especially as we strive to break down false narratives and negative stereotypes that divide us as a nation.”

Janney said the school administrators should be commended for listening to the Muslim community’s concerns and honoring their right to be recognized along with other faith groups in the school.

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization is also calling for diversity training for all school staff using CAIR’s “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” which is designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
