(WASHINGTON, D.C, 4/26/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the recent outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan and called on the Biden Administration to make it clear that the United States supports a transition to a civilian government chosen by the people of Sudan.
According to reports, the fighting between the Sudanese army and a rogue paramilitary group known as the RSF has already claimed 400 lives, injured thousands and displaced tens of thousands more. The violence threatens to plunge the country into further chaos and instability, causing immense suffering to the people of Sudan.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“The ongoing violence in Sudan between military and militia factions that began in Ramadan is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end. We call on the Biden administration to clearly and fully make clear that it supports the establishment of a civilian government chosen by the people, not a military dictatorship imposed by force with help from bad actors outside of Sudan.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan during this difficult time and urge the Biden administration to do everything it can to secure a permanent ceasefire, assist refugees and evacuees, and promote civilian rule by a representative government freely chosen by the people of Sudan.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
