(MIAMI, FL, 12/20/2016) – On Wednesday, December 21, the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) will co-sponsor a “Chanukah to Say NO to Islamophobia and NO to Racism” event with Jewish Voice for Peace.* Similar events are happening in more than 20 cities across the country.
WHAT: Chanukah to Say NO to Islamophobia and NO to Racism
DATE: Wednesday, December 21, 2016
TIME: 5:30 PM
PLACE:Â Lincoln Road, in front of the menorah at Euclid Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
Alan Levine, civil rights lawyer and member of Jewish Voice for Peace stated:
“We need to be visible at this moment to make it perfectly clear that we cannot, we will not, stand silently by in the face of Islamophobia and racism – not in our streets, not by government institutions.
“Islamophobia affects us all. The political rhetoric experienced during the past years has contributed to an alarming rise of hate incidents and hate crimes throughout the state and the Nation.â€
“Last year, we experienced a 500 percent increase in hate incident/hate crimes in Florida while the FBI reports that the rest of the nation experienced a 67 percent increase. Islamophobia affects not only Muslims in America but it is also an aggressive attack against our civil liberties. Islamophobia, racism, and xenophobia weaken the American fabric of life that nurtures the rich cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of all its residents,” said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, CAIR-Florida Communications Director.
CAIR-Florida is the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties of all people, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR-Florida es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
