(MIAMI, FL, 8/29/2018) — The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) today condemned Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis’ racist slur targeting Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who won yesterday’s Democratic gubernatorial primary. During a Fox News interview, DeSantis claimed the election of Florida’s first African-American governor would “monkey this up.”
In a statement, CAIR-Florida Communications Director Wilfredo Amr Ruiz said:
“Representative DeSantis owes all Floridians an apology. We are increasingly weary of denouncing political candidates embracing the racist and xenophobic tone set by Donald Trump’s administration. CAIR-Florida will work to ensure that all public officials and candidates adhere to the standards of human decency and ethics that we expect from all those holding or seeking positions of authority in Florida and in America.”
