(TAMPA, FL, 8/25/2016) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) has filed a complaint in the Hillsborough County Circuit Court on behalf of two Muslim Arab men who were held at gunpoint by an employee of the Allstar Body Shop of Tampa.
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Defendants and legal counsel will be available for interview at CAIR-Fl's Tampa Office from 1:30 p.m. -3:00 p.m.
On or about December 9, 2014, after speaking with a manager of Allstar Body Shop about prices and services, employee Paul Ryan Young reportedly shouted racial and anti-Islamic slurs at cousins Samer Saqer and Samer Samhoury, saying: “You f**king Muslims! I hate your kind!” and “Go back to Afghanistan! . . .Go back, you f**king Arabs!” Young then retrieved a 9mm handgun from his car and pointed it at Samhoury's head while physically pushing Saqer. After the incident, the police found out that the gun was loaded.
Young was subsequently arrested and plead guilty to criminal charges. He was only sentenced to probation.
“To have a gun pointed at your head simply because of who you are is an act of terror. We hope to bring justice and security back into the lives of Mr. Samhoury, Mr. Saqer, and their families. They were terrorized by this business and we need to send a strong message that this type of hatred and violence will not be tolerated,” said Katherine Heffner, civil rights attorney for CAIR-Florida, who represents both plaintiffs.
