(TAMPA, FL, 1/27/20232) – The Florida chapter of thew Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today welcomed the sentencing in federal court imposed on two men for hate crime charges after their racially-motivated ax attack against a Black man in Citrus Springs.
“Driven by bigotry and hate, the defendants brutally assaulted a Black man for no other reason than his race,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
As a result of this crime, Rosy Lashley was sentenced to 60 months in prison, and Robert Lashley (Rosy’s brother) to 36 months in prison.

CAIR-Florida Executive Director Imam Abdullah Jaber said:
“This sentence serves as a reminder that hate and bigotry will not be tolerated in our society. But the fight for racial justice is far from over, it is a call to action for all of us to stand up against hate and discrimination, to educate ourselves and others, and to actively work toward creating a society in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. As Frederick Douglass said, ‘Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.’ Let us demand justice and equality for all.”
