(ATLANTA, GA, 7/14/19) – The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Georgia) today condemned a series of racist tweets by President Trump targeting female congresswomen.
Trump’s Sunday morning tweets called on the congresswomen to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. . .You can’t leave fast enough.”
He did not name his intended targets, but he apparently meant Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York; Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts; Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan; and Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
Omar was born in Somalia, while Tlaib was born to Palestinian immigrants in Detroit. Pressley is African-American and was born in Cincinnati. Ocasio-Cortez was born in New York City to a family of Puerto Rican heritage.
In a statement, CAIR-Georgia Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“If there were any doubt that an unrepentant racist occupies the Oval Office, President Trump erased it today. ‘Go back to your country’ is one of the most common, idiotic, and hateful taunts that bigots level at people of color, especially American citizens of Muslims and Mexican descent. It is also the last thing many victims of hate crimes hear before they come under attack.”
“What’s ironic is not only the fact that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Tlaib, and Rep. Pressley were born in the United States, but the Trump family’s own history of immigration. President Trump’s mother was a Scottish-born immigrant to the United States, and his father was a first-generation American of German descent (who went on to march with the Ku Klux Klan).
“President Trump is also hardly a case study in American patriotism. After spending his presidential campaign badmouthing America, he has spent his presidency undermining American institutions, disregarding American values, and endangering American citizens.
“Unlike President Trump and other racists who are American citizens by happenstance of their birth, naturalized American citizens like Rep. Ilhan Omar made an affirmative choice to embrace American values, pass a citizenship test, and swear an oath to the United States. This is their country, as much as it is anyone else’s.
“If Donald Trump has a problem with that, perhaps he needs to move elsewhere–or take a citizenship test.”
