(ATLANTA, GA – 12/30/2019) On behalf of Georgia's Muslim community, the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today extended best wishes for a full recovery to civil rights legend and longtime congressman John Lewis in the wake of his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer.
In a statement, CAIR-Georgia Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Congressman Lewis' legendary activism during the Civil Rights Movement represented only the beginning of his work. For decades, Congressman Lewis has been a strong and persistent supporter of justice for diverse communities across our nation, including American Muslims.
“When President Trump instituted his first version of the Muslim Ban, Congressman Lewis personally went to the airport, demanded the release of detained travelers, and delivered inspiring words to thousands of protesters. Congressman Lewis has also been a moral voice in foreign policy, from voting against the Iraq War to co-sponsoring a resolution affirming every American's constitutional right to engage in boycotts.
“We ask Allah-Almighty God-to guide, comfort, and heal Congressman John Lewis so that he can continue serving and inspiring people around the world for years to come.”
