On Friday, September 8, the Council on American-Islamic Relations hosted a dinner for former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Va. The theme of his address was “Dialogue of Civilizations: Five Years After 9/11,” in which he called for respect and dialogue between followers of the three Abrahamic faiths. He also condemned the September 11 attacks, saying that there is no Islamic justification for them, and called on Muslims to continue to work against terrorism.
A private reception with President Khatami, including a photo opportunity, preceded the dinner. Dinner guests met the former president and had an opportunity to ask him questions.
Khatami was in Washington, D.C. to take part in an event at the National Cathedral.
