The San Francisco Bay Area Office of Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR-SFBA, and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC, filed a federal civil rights complaint last Wednesday against Berkeley public schools, alleging harassment and discrimination against Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the legislation as a “one-sided, and dishonest proposal about campus antisemitism that ignore[s] anti-Palestinian racism and conflates criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism.”

The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned “UCI’s militarized police response” Wednesday evening and said it had staff at the campus monitoring the situation.
“These students have been engaging in nonviolent speech, and UCI must cease all attempts to intimidate and chill free speech, including the militant use of law enforcement to forcefully remove peaceful protests,” CAIR-LA officials said in their statement. “We are extremely concerned that UCI is choosing to punish students for constitutionally protected speech, especially since this police activity comes on the heels of numerous student suspensions and disciplinary actions.”

Over 8,000 anti-Muslim complaints were recorded across the nation last year, marking the highest total in the 30 years the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has tracked the complaints.
CAIR received the most complaints in the final three months of last year, shortly after militant group Hamas launched a surprise incursion in Israel that left about 1,200 people dead.

“The order targets student advocates for Palestine and directs universities to punish students and organizations that are critical of Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” CAIR said in a statement.
