CAIR-GA: Decatur Schools employee scrutinized for allegedly wearing keffiyeh on Oct. 7 anniversary – WABE
Azka Mahmood, executive Director of the Georgia chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, said it was “unsurprising” that parents reported Downer for wearing a keffiyeh on Oct. 7.
“There seems to be pervasive racism and denial of the existence of Palestine and Palestinian humanity in Decatur schools,” Mahmood said. “Oct. 7 also marks the beginning of the Palestinian genocide and people have the right to recognize and mourn the loss of civilian and innocent life everywhere. People who fear a keffiyeh should question their biases as to why a cultural symbol is implicitly regarded as dangerous and why one group’s pain is regarded as superior to others.”
CAIR-NJ: Somerset man pleads guilty to RU Islamic Center vandalism – Herald News (Passaic County, NJ)
The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations welcomed the guilty plea.
“With anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian bigotry on the rise nationwide, it’s imperative for perpetrators to be held accountable,” CAIR-NJ Communications Aya Elamroussi said in a statement. “The vandalization of the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University (CILRU), which had a Palestinian flag displayed at the time, is an example of such bigoted violence. All Americans, including Muslims, have the right to practice their religion freely without fear or intimidation.”
CAIR-CT: Residents defend Greenwich teacher removed from Wilton library position – Greenwich Time
Farhan Memon, a Norwalk resident and chairman of the Connecticut Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, criticized Boucher’s comments. He said Boucher “threatened” the library board by saying the Board of Selectmen would monitor the Wilton Library’s actions in regard to Gawad, which he said “ultimately led to Gawad’s removal.”
“We feel that Boucher’s remarks… pose a threat to free speech and stifle voices advocating for human rights and justice in Palestine,” Memon said.
