Ms. Santiago’s indictment is “an important step” toward ensuring that anyone involved in the attack is held accountable, Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement on Monday.
“American Muslims should never have to fear that attending a mosque, sending their children to Islamic school or gathering with their community could make them targets of violence,” Mr. Awad said.

“We are asking for them to remove it unless they’re willing to open up the history of all faiths and talk about every faith honestly and openly, including what all of our faiths say about slavery and the harms of slavery as well,” said Sameeha Rizvi, CAIR-Texas’ government affairs and legislative manager.

Dig deeper: The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also held a news conference opposing the proposed standards, saying the changes promote bigotry. The group also said students would not have a well-rounded knowledge of the world.
“Our community is not asking for special treatment. We are not asking to erase anyone else’s faith, history, or contributions, nor are we here to spread hate or division against anyone,” said Sameeha Rizvi, Texas legislative affairs and legislative manager for CAIR.
