CAIR-LA Welcomes Anaheim Union High School District’s Free Ramadan Meal Kit Initiative for Fasting Muslim Students

AUHSD recently announced that free meal kits will be available for students enrolled at an AUHSD school site to pick up each school day from Monday, March 3, to Friday, March 21. The meal kits are meatless and include both breakfast and lunch components. Families are required to fill out an online form to indicate their interest in receiving the free meal kit prior to pick up.

In the press release, AUHSD stated, “Offering meals to students observing Ramadan is an act of respect and support, while also ensuring they can maintain their energy levels and be active participants in their academic and social lives.”

During Ramadan, Muslims who observe fasting abstain from food and water from dawn until dusk, breaking their fast with a meal called iftar.

In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:

“We commend AUHSD for its commitment to accommodating the needs of its diverse students. By offering free to-go meal kits during the month of Ramadan, the district prioritizes its students’ physical needs and well-being and helps foster an environment where students feel supported in their faith practices and tolerance and respect thrive. We hope that more school districts will take similar steps to ensure Muslim students feel seen and valued at school, not only during Ramadan but year-round.”
