(LOS ANGELES, CA – 9/30/2019) – The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today welcomed a decision by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to open an inquiry into how a recruitment ad for the department appeared on the right-wing website Breitbart.
The ad featured a female officer with the LAPD shield, web address and the words: “Choose your future” and “LAPD is hiring!”
On Sept. 27, Noah Shachtman, editor-in-chief of the Daily Beast, posted a screenshot of the ad on Twitter and questioned why the department was using Breitbart as a recruitment tool.
A day later, Police Chief Michael Moore claimed the LAPD did not purchase digital advertising space from Breitbart and the department was trying to determine how it occurred and if the post was an attempt to discredit the LAPD.
In a tweet, the LAPD explained recruitment ads were purchased through Google and were displayed on Breitbart because of automatic placement. The department further tweeted that it would cease its Google ads while it reexamines its ad filters.

In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:
“We are grateful the LAPD is taking this issue seriously enough to open an inquiry into how this happened. Breitbart is the definition of fake news and a hate site, with a history of publishing bigoted and sexist content to inflame a white nationalist audience. There are many Muslims and other minorities who proudly wear the badge of the LAPD, as well as the millions of minority groups served by the department. It is of the utmost importance that the LAPD and all law enforcement agencies distance themselves using sites like this for recruiting.”
Breitbart has drawn criticism for publishing controversial articles with headlines:
- “Data: Young Muslims Are a Ticking Time Bomb in the West”
- “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy”
- “The Smartest People in the World Are All Men”
CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
