CAIR-MA Welcomes Arrest in Racist Harassment, Threats Targeting Asian-American Woman in Boston

(BOSTON, MA, 10/4/2023) – The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of the suspected perpetrator of racist threats and harassment targeting an Asian-American woman in Boston.

A 16-year-old has been arrested after allegedly hurling racial slurs and threatening to rob an Asian-American woman on the Boston MBTA subway last month. The woman was allegedly “asked if she made eggrolls.” There were reportedly several other perpetrators.

“We thank law enforcement authorities for arresting one of the suspected perpetrators of this disturbing attack and urge them to be swift in apprehending the others,” said CAIR-MA Executive Director Tahirah Amatul-Wadud. “No one deserves to be subjected to racist attacks and harassment while going about their daily lives.”

Amatul-Wadud also thanked the victim for her courage in speaking up.

She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
