(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/10/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today marked the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide and warned of the dangers of rising anti-Muslim bigotry in Bosnia, China, India and other countries.
Tomorrow, commemoration ceremonies and funerals for 30 newly discovered bodies will be held in Srebrenica, where more than 8,000 Muslim Bosniak men and boys were massacred by anti-Muslim Serb nationalists in 1995 during the Bosnian War. The Srebrenica massacre is the only acknowledged genocide that occurred in Europe since the Holocaust.

In a statement, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“Twenty-eight years ago, more than 8,000 innocent Muslims were massacred in Europe’s first such genocide since the Second World War. This atrocious crime against humanity, the victims of which are still being unearthed from mass graves, is a reminder of the seriousness of the threat posed by anti-Muslim bigotry. We ask God to enter the victims into paradise and grant solace to their relatives and loved ones.
“Unfortunately, Serb nationalism and separatism is on the rise in Bosnia again. The Bosniak people are once again faced with the threat of violence and war. Muslims in India, China, Burma, Palestine, and other areas continue to face oppression, persecution and death at the hands of anti-Muslim bigots.
“The Muslim world and the entire international community have a responsibility to take concrete action to oppose the rising threat of anti-Muslim bigotry wherever it threatens the lives of Muslims.”
Awad noted that two weeks ago, Bosnia’s Serb Republic passed a law saying that rulings and decisions by the Constitutional Court of Bosnia will not be enforced or applicable in the entity.
