“As bias-motivated incidents continue to occur on college campuses and in public spaces, people often wonder what they can do to intervene and help in case they are a witness,” said CAIR’s Maryland representative Zainab Chaudry. “This training of trainers is designed to expand our network of skilled leaders who cultivate safer communities by teaching people safe ways to disrupt harassment and intervene in potentially volatile situations.”
She cited the latest FBI hate crimes statistics, which revealed that almost one-quarter of the victims of anti-religious hate crimes in 2016 were Muslim, and noted the need for all Americans to unite against all forms of bigotry.
Similar bystander intervention trainings, and trainings of trainers, have been organized across the country in response to a wave of bias-related incidents.
The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon that often prevents people from intervening on behalf of victims of harassment, assault, or other criminal activity. Through training in non-violent intervention methods and role-playing in mock scenarios, participants will learn methods and techniques to help train others to overcome the pressure to stay silent.
CAIR has launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents.
