(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 7/12/2017) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on political and religious leaders in that state and nationwide to repudiate a genocidal post by an elected official, for which that individual is refusing to apologize.
Kalkaska Village President Jeff Sieting recently stated that he has nothing to apologize for regarding racist and xenophobic statements about Muslims on his Facebook page including a call to kill “every last Muslim.” Sieting defended his statements under the guise that his call for genocide is protected under the First Amendment.
Village President: ”˜I owe nobody an apology” for posts (Traverse City Record Eagle)
“We call on political and religious leaders throughout Michigan to strongly repudiate Sieting’s dangerous rhetoric calling for the killing of all Muslims,” said CAIR-MI Executive Diretor Dawud Walid. “Sieting’s unabashed bigotry sounds eerily familiar to those who have stirred people to commit genocide against religious and ethnic minorities in other parts of the world.”
Walid also noted that Sieting’s reaffirmation of killing all Muslims comment coincided with the 22 anniversary of the Sbrebrenica massacre of Bosnian Muslims and that Michigan is home to thousands of refugees who fled that ethnic cleansing in former Yugoslavia.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
